According to officials a new freight rail across Eurasia has been opened. The rail links the southwest economic center of Chongqing with the Belgian Port of Antwerp and makes goods’ travel time 50% shorter.
The rail is 11,179 kilometers and runs through Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus, Poland, and Germany. On the new route, that was first used 19.3.2011, transports take according to Chongqing Mayor Huang Qifan approximately 16 days which is half the time required for transports by sea.
Huang also believes the freight rail to be less expensive and safer than sea transport, which so far has been the main method for transporting goods between China and Europe.
The rail adds on to the Eurasian Land Bridge of 10,800 kilometers to the north and will according to officials primarily be used to connect the southwest industrial area and the southern Pearl Delta manufacturing centre with Europe.
